OK, Im nicking another one of these "/r/AskReddit/" posts/questions because they ask great questions over there and I wanna see what folks over here would have to say in response. And we need more discussion since we've had an abundance of it lately and I wanna keep that going. Anyways, as the title implies, this time we're talking about "What statistic would you like to know about yourself?" I saw this thread and the answers are good ones.

So, what stat does people around here want to know about themselves that you never knew before?

I often experience insomnia, and what I'd like to know is how much time I have wasted because of my insomnia.

Number of days left to live. Then I could plan everything.

How much useless statistics there has been collected.

That'd be a bit of a grim thing to know though, wouldn't it Yard? Wouldn't it drive you mad knowing you had exactly x number of days left to live, especially if it turned out to be much shorter than you expected?

Thats not really a statistic about you though is it Axel? Unless... you yourself collect useless stats and want to know how many you have?

Whilst there are a few other things I'd like to know about myself, if I could really only pick one, I think I'd like to know how much of my lifetime I've spent procrastinating instead of instead doing something productive or at least worthwhile. Although I do kinda dread to think how much time I have actually spent wasting said time.

Otherwise, it would be interesting to know about how much money I have wasted in my lifetime.

Perhaps, but at least then I could gather all my funds and give myself a great sendoff, as well as say goodbye to loved ones beforehand. I think I'd still rather know honestly.

    This, on the other hand...

This would be grim to be. It'd make me feel like I wasted my life, and I don't think it'd motivate me at all. To each their own though.

It'd still kinda suck all the joy and fun out of everything though wouldn't it Yard? I mean, imagine if you had a list of things you wanted to do in life. Before you know how long you have, you could do these things just for the sake of doing them and having a good experience and some fun. But if you get the knowledge of how much time you have left you may only do these things because you know you won't get to do so for much longer.

Or if you had very limited time left you might not get the chance to do so at all and may just spend your last days lamenting all the things you could have done but didn't. Plus again, wouldn't it just be maddening? Especially as time ticked down and the day of your death approached?

Ah, for me it'd be a good laugh. I'd probably just make a bunch of jokes about the time I've wasted when I could have done something.

This just got me thinking about how much money I may have wasted in my lifetime as well. I don't wanna know lol.

Yeah, to each their own. Personally, I don't think knowing my date of death would bother me, but who can say until they're in that situation?

Grim suggestion, but you could always try asking the terminally ill. Im sure if anyone who is sadly in that category would probably have something interesting since their provided estimations of such numbers by their doctors and the like.

Precisely how many lottery tickets must I buy before I get to the winning ticket, for each of the upcoming the 6/49 Lotteries here in Canada, if I were to buy tickets.

Since I know the average payout, I would know which ones to 'invest' in.

    You misunderstand.
I already know all of the permutation and statistical stuff (I am an Engineer by trade)

    I meant, as a statistic:

Assume that I am going to make a sequence of ticket purchases for a given lottery draw, ticket 1, 2, 3,..., n-1, n, n+1,......,13983815, 13983816
where 'n' is the exact position, in the sequence, of the Jackpot-winning ticket.

I want to know 'n' for each of the upcoming lottery draws.

I know that it is, in reality, impossible to really know this value, but that is the whole premise of the OP.

I get what you mean now. You want to minimize costs, so if you knew the exact number of tickets you had to buy before you got around to the winning ticket, you wouldn't have to spend a bunch of cash for a guarantee.

,,,and, if the value of n for any given draw is greater than the jackpot payout, I won't buy any tickets.

I would instead suggest calculating the expected value for each lottery ticket. If it's way too low, it's highly likely that you will lose a ton of money before you gain anything.

Sadly, it's impossible to predict the future so precisely that you know exactly which numbers will be drawn by the lottery.

That would surely just be a short term loss though wouldn't it? Provided you actually had the necessary cash to buy the tickets and pay bills and whatnot until the winning ticket is announced and you brought enough tickets for a larger payoff you wouldn't have a problem right?
