I imagine its a rythmic (or arythmic) chorus of cascading 'noise', but not as sound but directly in your mind, and like audio halluciations - where people think they hear a voice or such within meaningless white noise/complete silence, which takes on some personal meaning - this mental song 'speaks' to each person; it might even be less of a song and more that it plants the idea that it is a song as a part it being an inherant psycho-hazard (like radiation that destroys the mind).
Though I do wonder if the sound that plays when a hive agrros onto you is acctually some sort of version of the 'song'. I do love that, now that we can go to the alien sector, we can hear the sound Algol was referring to when he said 'I will never forget the *sound* of *that place*' (atleast, I assume it is?).
