I think there are more pressing issues of things that need fixed. Added yet another thing and overlooking other current issues isn't my idea of an improvement. The idea sounds good, but I rather have a more stable gaming platform free of glitches.
There's nothing wrong with the changes per se but there's other areas that require wayyyy more attention a hell of a lot sooner than the regular arena (especially if any incentives to play said arena are going with these changes)
Focus on the stuff that you (Kixeye) said you were going to address (build times, repair times, trust, quality control and communication) and leave the fluff until after you've addressed the major issues that are making players laeve the game.
Doomrooster, it all depends exactly what this is a precursor for? If its the precursor for the introduction of some underhanded sneaky coin grab thats going to destroy moral and encourage hackers even more, then dont even waste your time.
Personally I would prefer you focus your efforts on reducing build and repair times, and ofc dealing with those who choose to play dishonestly. Fix whats broken before introducing more stuff into the game.
I love the idea, anyway to make it so you can still use your fleets even when your dock is repairing? If so then I would definitely give it two thumbs up
As presented this sounds like a great idea. Fun with no ramifications. However, I think with the ongoing customer trust deficit there is a bit of skepticism. Heck why stop here...allow players within the same alliance to hit each other with no repair, medals, resources or damage protection involved.
I love the idea, especially with sandbox format, but there would need to be a reward structure. FA requires a certain density of players to be fun and to avoid long queue times. One way to increase density is to offer good rewards...though probably not tech rewards, which would only contribute to power creep.
Combat Ranking - obviously we'd want these battles to affect Combat Rating, but would probably need to remove the FAT feature where you start with points according to your combat rating...otherwise, pirates who spend a lot of chair time doing free FA battles would be impossible to overtake when FAT begins. (Alternately, you could leave the feature and only FA veterans would be in contention for top prizes--which could also work.) Make Combat Ranking visible in a pirate's profile Badges for Combat Ranking - possibly a lot of them, with different tiers -- a whole new tab of badges
Another way to increase participant density would be to limit the free FA format to a certain weekend, or certain hours of the day.
I also love Carl's idea of attempting to level-match fleets, perhaps with subs getting a large penalty, such that those building top-tech fleets would have the greatest odds of encountering subs. Of course, in a perfect world, the fleet level system would first need an overhaul first, so it takes into account the number and type of weapons, armor, and hulls. The current system, based only on fleet armor, is comically bad: a HH fleet could get "evenly paired" against tigersharks or a HC leading blade rhinos.
Sounds very good ..few questions is it open to all level of players or will there be some kind of entry cap ? if you win do you stay on ? Can we have endless battles all day Are we going to use our own fleets or is there a toy box ? Thanks
i am neutral about this, preferably maybe something like no uranium cost, half repairs, and double vxp gain would make this a good alternative to farming salvs and vxp targets during vxp events.
Maybe once a week kix should do free instant repair for all Fleets(not FA but for real) or if too much then limit 10 free fleet repairs that day idk lol happy kill day with lots of chaos muhaha

I actually love this idea and @LEAD_WEIGHT's idea. A lot of other combat games have similar arena games like those to play. Host games with set parameters, like a fleet level cap and minimum, ability to not allow certain hulls or hull types( I.E. no subs, no flagships, no limited hulls, ect. ), a dozen or so random maps possibly with islands and neutral turrets you can take over by parking next to them, and maybe even an alliance vrs alliance feature, where two( or more) alliances all enter a team vrs team battle.
As long as there isn't anything about regular gameplay that will prevent you from doing it anytime you choose (dead dock, op, or damaged buildings) then I am absolutely all for it... Could pass the time during dock repairs and that would be great for retention.
I would rather see something done with rogue crews. A recycling system that allows you to exchange x amount of commons for an uncommon+.

I can think of a single purpose and that would be free testing of ships, assuming you can get an opponent.

It's pretty much as far as you could possibly get from something you need to do. It's for fun. People complain and say all there is in the game is chores then they get something fun and instantly attack it? smh
i like the free part but not the no vxp and i think players should have to use the fleets they have built so they can gain good vxp for a small amount of uranium cost
