Base hitting, remove the Strafe and Lens, if you're using exos, especially pure beam you're blitzing, bobbing and weaving is a waste of time.
Use that extra mass for as high beams as possible, if you ain't got that high beams, fill that mass with armor.

The repairs of that would be unnecessary though I doubt it would glance anywhere past an hour and a half an exo.

Why do people keep suggesting putting armor on Exos? It is a waste of weight. May as well gear up with the maximum DPS and just blow your opponent away. And for blitzing you definitely want Rear thrusters. Not Strafe or a complete lack of them.

If the shields hold out longer than the hull what is the point of having it? its not good if they can kill the ship without eliminating the shield first.

Are you kidding? Exos have a base health of 360. Shields block 90% of shots (and last twice as long against the right weapon) so if the shields were to outlast the Exo's base health it would either take 1800 damage from a weapon of the category it can resist or 3600 damage from a weapon of a category it cannot resist. What shields do you know that are that strong? Level 5 Spec is too heavy for an Exo. Level 4 Shock is too heavy to be reasonable (and still have any DPS). Deflectors are useless...
The most natural shield to have on an Exo is Spec 4 which has less than half the shielding of a shield that will outlast the health (assuming you are hit by lasers). So you could fight a fight where the shields are depleted and then you win, then fight another fight where your shields are depleted and win, and you'll STILL not have lost all your health. MOST of the time you only fight one seriously damaging fight between each docking, so the only case I can see you using a severely beaten ship in another fight is if you are getting ganked or farming cargos. And you should not be building ships to compensate for surviving multiple battles. You should want to win your first battle by such a margin that you don't even need survivability compensations for the next.
I am curious what sad sap has actually watched his Exo die before the shields were gone... I'm pretty sure it hasn't happened. If it has, it is because the ship was already damaged badly before the fight.
Mine has two PBs and one Scatter (due to not having enough space for three PBs). But nevertheless they still have more range and AoE than Beams. And I've personally used it in a range vs blitz Exo challenge and won with 3 ships still alive.
Always Spec 4 on Exos, unless you want to hazard some Shock shields, although only level 3 Shocks are really viable. I don't really focus much on armor. Tho it might not hurt to lower the DPS a few for the sake of more life. I'll have to tinker, so will you

I know this is for base hits but if you want a kick-as* FvF exo fleet here it is
3xBeam laser3
3xzynthium alloy1
Spectral shield4
And you can use whatever specials you like as long as it is very light
