We need something different then Warp Gates in space. We shouldn't be tunneled in one small area, this should be for going to a different universe and called black holes.
Our ships should travel freely at warp speed where we shouldn't be caught by other ships.
Right now all we have are a bunch of spawn killers waiting at the warp gates with low level harriers jumping the base fleets.
It doesn't make any sense.
Have a narrow band strip surrounding each planet which we can select to travel to solar systems (stars within our own universe) that are further away (which are presently called sectors).

What if we have to travel to a warp gate to GO to another sector, but where that warp drops us is not necessary at the warp gate on the other side. For example, when you attack a planet, if you designate your fleet to move to a specific place on the planet they will warp away from your own, move to the planet and warp directly where you want them to locate. However, if you tell them to merely warp to the planet they will automatically distribute themselves somewhere in the planet's atmosphere (and you may have to travel a bit to find your target).
Similarly, the warp gate could essentially be the 'surface' of the next sector and where we actually show up in that sector is either up to us or random depending on whether we selected some place in the next sector or selected the warp gate itself. Of course, to return to our sector we'd have to fly through the warp gate on their side which potentially means fighting our way through but if they don't know who you are they might not realize you are escaping with loot.
As an added bonus, warp gates could potentially be NPC bases with towers and such to protect themselves. Once a warp gate is destroyed it takes 1hr to rebuild. People would obviously do what they can to prevent people from destroying their warp gates. This would be a double edged sword of course - not being able to be attacked by a sector also means not being able to return your ships to home (unless you warp to yet another sector and use that sector's warp gate to warp home...)
Why must we work cooperatively? Or rather, why force the players to work cooperatively?
So what you are saying.. is you want to play EVE online
We see other fleets in space and we have the engines to catch up to them then that's the way it should be. This warp gate thing will be a problem when we have millions playing this game. Lets get it right before it's too late to do something about it.
Would be nice to have some devs commenting on this.

So I think I'll personally be sticking to my own sector or hitting 300 (since the gate is significantly closer)

If leaving your sector is getting you jumped by sector gate watchdogs hit in sector! The only reason people hate about hitting in sector is all the **** in comms (switch to planet comms!)
