Just thought I would post a plan of a basic base layout as I think that sometimes words aren't enough to explain some of the guides ideas.
Obviously the gaps would be smaller between buildings and you can shuffle things around to suit your own taste/ideas.
This is my bases building block if you like, and all that is different to this is my second and third power plants fill in some gaps on the corners of the defense "ring", as you can see there is potential to protect 2 more buildings of your choice between the bunkers and the paired towers.
My mine and metal factories along with my oil rigs are ringed around this, well within the defense towers and bunkers ranges.
My wall blocks are just placed around the edges and spread around to stop enemies from deploying too close as are any spare buildings that don't need that much protection.
The pairing of mortar and gun turrets is important but I will add that if you move the gun out slightly, so that the red range ring's far edge meets the mortars edge, that will reduce the chances of having the mortar baited because the turret will take out any baiting units.

I started just leaving a few tanks and/or troops hidden in the folliage to stop this myself, which has thwarted the razor back tacktick.

How?, each one is covered by at least 2 pairs of turrets, and don't forget, I've not put in the gatherers etc. to cover the storages.
It's not 100% accurate, just showing the general idea of placements.
Since I changed my base to this layout, my losses have gone from 1mil+ regular losses to under 10,000, using all 3 attacks in a row. And I may add that the usual attackers have now given up attacking me because of their losses. Also, I have leveled up 10 times faster because I know it will be a solid defense at my base now.
Quite simply Lars, I know that this is a good basic layout because it works. My bunkers each cover the whole of these buildings, each mortar covers 90% of the layout as do the gun turrets.
My mine placements are at strategic points, where I think some one will attempt to bait my mortars, but because I don't pair towers tightly, the GT will take out, or at least severely damage any baiters.
I am now forced to upgrade stores. as they are fit to burst. :cool:

well, you only have to destroy one turret or bunker for each storage to get to it.....

well, for my base you have to destroy 2 turrets/bunkers to get to a storage....

Probably. But it's never only the placement of the buildings that matters. It's the mixture of building placement, mine placement, building levels, unit placement and unit levels. So only a pic like this isn't necessarely a good base.

putting your towers in the corners is the worst thing you can do! Your base absolutley fails if you do that! only the easiest farms have the towers in the corner.

the poster meant the corners of the group of buildings, otherwise they couldn't put "other buildings" outside the defensive "ring", not the borders of the base plan.

That is to say, if a unit with good splash damage, like paladins, was to attack the walls and other buildings, just outside of the defensive range, splash damage to turrets may bring their health down to a low enough level for a quick attack and retreat option.
