Apart from the lag concern, which is likely a major issue (one of your buddies getting hit? Put everyone who's awake on Comms into the spectator mode and lag the poor sucker that's attacking into failure,) I see two fairly obvious problems.
1) When you are attacking a base, someone can jump in, see what weapons you have, announce them on Comms and then also announce when you're getting ready to finish, so that the snoops outside are more likely to hit your fleet on exit. Take out the ability to "jump" someone coming out of a base when there's a Spectator, that would solve it, but then you'd just make sure that there was a friend watching all of your battles to "game the system" and never get hit.
2) This will allow any level of player to sit and watch a sector, jump into base attacks, no matter who is doing them, screenshot the base and post to their friends -- effectively building a catalog of every base within reach. We already do this, to some extent (I screenshot every base I don't hit routinely and make available to anyone who wants it) but there is both a limit by level, and a warning to the player that you took an interest in their base. A couple of us in our alliance run around and jump into new bases for a quick screenshot, even of bases we have no intention of hitting, but we do often get a target painted on us for doing it -- the price of being a Paparazzi, which this feature will negate.
I don't see easy solutions to either of these, apart from giving you the option of turning off Spectator access, which would help the first, but not the second (if not allowing people to watch your base getting hit would be a preference, stored for when you're not online, who on Earth would allow it?)
I'm so sick of map outs and people getting away with not hits. I think both of what you mentioned make the game better. If one person gets in your base, and has any game knowledge it becomes known to everyone they tell anyway. So this way leave little room for mistranslated facts.
+1
the idea is amazing, love it.
it'll allow players to learn and adapt faster and allow fleet and base competitions to be more widespread and enhanced for others.
I oppose the spectator viewing of fleet vs. base battles. Given the fact that anyone can observe the battle, that same person can get a snapshot of your base configuration and be better equipped and prepared to attack that base in the future. This is not what Kixeye intended, but it is how it will be used.
There is currently no way for a 3rd party to view a battle in progress.
We will be implementing a feature that allows any player to view a Fleet VS Fleet or Fleet VS Base battle. Any player can use the mouse to click on a battle and view the battle as a spectator only (cannot participate in battle). Spectators will not be able to view submerged submarines.
There will also a feature that announces when battles are taking place near your base in the Comm (chat window). This feature can be easily disabled if you do not want to receive battle notifications.
As Battle Pirates is a Massively Multiplayer Online game, we feel this will greatly enhance the effect of being an open-world game. The game has a strong emphasis on competition, so it only makes sense to grant anyone the ability to view players competing with each other.
There goes the hit and run assault. now there will be a que of fleets ready to hit you as you leave the base. if people are viewing the attack their fleets and comms should be disabled for the duration of the battle. It wont stop the skype brigade but it might help. Maybe a replay window that can be viewed anytime after the battle might be the way to go and won't clog up the comm.
It's not that I don't think kixeye are not on the same page it's just that the players are reading Sun Tzu Art of war and kixeye are reading Noddies big book of war.
Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas. includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used
I quit this game, it's complete crap, don't try to convince me to play again cause I recycled EVERYTHING to make sure I don't go back.
All that's left is trolling the forums
It should be only with permission by the player in the attack. I may not want "JOE BLOW" to see me battle.
I agree too. Make it so that only friends can view a battle. Or some sort of permission, or ability to turn it off. Theres a lot of opportunity for abuse or misuse that I am sure Kixeye doesn't intend with this feature.
And Socialism comes to Battle Pirates. Got a great base? Now you'll have to let anyone copy it for free, without putting any work in themselves, and without any loss. Great FvF tactics? You have to share! After all, why should anyone get ownership to anything they've worked/ paid for, without sharing it with everyone else?
so freaking cool
I put this in the suggestions forum but never thought you guys would actually consider it
(others most likely also thought up and posted this idea before me, I am not trying to take credit)
and to the ones that are going to complain like the dude in front of me
copying a base is not an easy feat, and you can't tell the tower specials... and most all of the bases are already copies of other bases. my designs are usually based on someones design then heavily modified.
and for the tactics how are you really expecting no one to ever see your tactics? only fight salvages or off line players. you don't really need any skill to kill a AI controlled fleet and if you are fighting a player guess what they get to watch, and as they are enemies with you they are the ones you don't want to find out your tactics...
freaking idiots i swear pulling the socialism card
you get to pull the socialism card when your captured cargo starts getting split between every player in the sector
I can see one problem with this. If you have spectators who can see what all the ships in a battle are doing, then they can talk to their friend in comms and tell him/her where the enemy subs are - don't need sonar any more, just an on-line friend!

"Kicking the crap out of RRs wherever they Frubble"
Love this idea, and though I poo-pooed the privacy concerns in a previous post, I'll grant that people are pretty protective of their builds and tactics. So I wouldn't be satisfied with on/off. I'd like there to be separate on/offs for allies, neutrals and enemies in both fleet and base battles. Maybe a little much to ask, but it sure would be nice.
As far as the concerns about bandwidth and server load go, it makes no difference to the wires whether they're sending map position updates or battle screen position updates. It takes virtually the same server time to calculate either of these and the same bandwidth to transmit them. KIXEYE seemed to do pretty good with the last BI event as far as lag reduction goes, and that was with 4 people controlling ships on the same map. Much MUCH easier to simply view the data non-interactively, so I don't see lag as being an issue, especially if transmission is prioritized with the combatants at the top of the list.
I'm personally tired of people lying in comms about so-and-so dying in their base at the first turn or getting into someone's base when all they did was take out a bunch of turrets and retreat at 1% fleet health. It'd be nice to be able to get the truth verified by others without handing out invites to a group page so they can look at BL screenshots.
Ugh..... I agree completely with Max on this.... God help me. But when will we see this rolled out Kixeye??

As stated there will notification of battles near your base, ALARM BELL going ding ding ding.... if you attack a base, it's currently difficult enough to escape being attacked on exit with the pop up that covers the screen when you leave. So now, you've got to combat a base , a base guard, and the alerted neighbor. I say nay... this is a horrid Idea!
Unless you do 1 of 3 things...
Put the bases back to the original shape and size and bring back the ability to park under the base avoiding the waiting neighbor.
Delay the attack pop up 5 secs giving one a chance to move,
Or start the neighbors ships with an equal amount of dmg as the exiting fleet. Re.. attacker has 2 boats left then neighbor gets 2 boats if those boats are destroyed then he only has those to repair. Or no alert system at all HORRID HORRID HORRID IDEA!!!!! Base attacks will go to null if this is allowed as it stands! won't be worth it
yeah i dont want too have Randoms seeing my strategy's when im hitting a base or when im hitting a fleet.....i should be able too have a allow list or something too let folks jump in my battles or ONLY PEOPLE IN YOUR ALLIANCE CAN WATCH...as far as randoms go
i dont want noobs getting there Jolly's off looking at my ships
I think being able to see battles will help me learn from others. I will be embarrassed though when some folks watch me. oh well. thanks for all the improvements.
HATE IT!!!!!!!
There is no way I want my enemies watching me all the time! or the alert to battle thing is very contradictory to the game!!!! Have the fun is being sneaking, sneaking in and attacking. When this happens to you it gets the adrenaline pumping and it also keeps players online just watching the seas looking for enemies. We like to sneak in! and sneak out or even get caught once and awhile! No alerts! No watching.... normally don't people charge to have others watch.......... (hehehe)

What i would also suggest is that when these battles occur, perhaps a tag of sorts to give an indication of the size of the battle. For example 2 fleets vs each other might state "a battle has commenced at (co-ords) but an all out slug fest might be tagged as "an epic battle has commenced at (co-ords) to give an indication of the type of battle nearby. A base battle would have a different tag "the battle between (player A & player B has begun at (co-ords)
Some people never see the light, until it shines through their bullet holes. o.O
Bad idea. The bad points (already mentioned) far out-way the benefits.
If you're going to open hits up, so anyone can watch, you may as well make every single base or fleet (at sea) viewable with a click. Why wait for a battle to start to see all this? Add full technical info too.
You turning this game into something completely different and will lose a lot of players.
Absolutely love this idea, Swag. It will be a big help for us to train new players and get them up to speed more quickly, especially if we are also able to see battles against dracs. I would, however, like to see a few limitations:
1. Only allowing in-sector viewing, i.e. you can only spectate battles in your own sector, to keep the home-field advantage in play
2. Hiding the battle timer in base raids from the spectators so that they don't know exactly when to jump you on your way out
Other than that, I'm loving this idea.
"If the tiger ever stands still, the elephant will crush him with his mighty tusks. But the tiger will not stand still. He will leap upon the back of the elephant, tearing huge chunks from his side, and then he will leap back into the dark jungle. And slowly the elephant will bleed to death."
1 good thing about all this is that at least Kixeye are actually requesting feedback on new ideas rather than just updating the game and realising their mistakes afterwards!
1st you attack a base, you have gangsters waiting for you all the time...
2nd they watch you attack a base and watch the timer, so they can jump you...

Because really, if given the option most players are gonna stop the guys on the other team from spectating.
Also any idea on the spectator cap? im assuming there will have to be some sort of limit in place.
