Shields
This post tries explain in a very simple way my understanding on how shields works.
Note in order to simply I am not considering shield by pass (phased mags), or extra damage to shield (aurora ray)
There are 3 situations that should be taken in consideration.
Shield type matching weapon type (i.e. Spectral against energy weapon or meta shields)
Shield not matching weapon type (i.e. Spectral against projectile weapon)
Shield hit by a weapon that in one shot delivers more power that the shield can withstand
Shield type matching weapon type:
- 10% damage goes to armor
- 45% damages the shield
- 45% is absorbed by the shield
Shield not matching weapon type
- 10% damage goes to armor
- 90% damage damages the shield
- 0% is absorbed by the shield
This table shows an example of how different shields works
Shield hit by a weapon that in one shot delivers more power that the shield can withstand
That is an interesting situation, after testing it has been confirmed that the shield will not work as per above, but will just be depleted. Which means that in the first and second case if a weapon with a power of 1112 will hit a shield, the shield will just drop to zero. The armor damage will not be 10% but all the weapon extra power will hit the armor. I could not test if the shield will absorb 45%.
This last condition should be confirmed by Kixeye, it is difficult to assess if 45% of the power is absorb or not. It is a very interesting situation because weapons with same DPS but different way of shooting will have a different effect on a shield. A weapon that as long recharge time (i.e. siege or impulse) might be able to deliver a fatal blow in one shot to a shield, while a weapon like aurora might just have to hit several times the same shield to achieve the same effect.
This behaviour is very evident on bases, when collateral damage hit a nearby module, you can notice that the shield might drop to zero.
