Seriously... Hexadecimal is hard to all this nerds??? LOL

It's not the difficulty, as much as it is the engagement and the base level of technical competency that I was interested in. Obviously the puzzle has to be solveable or it's a crappy contest. Now that we know that enough people can recognise a certain format by sight, we can REALLY push the boundaries.

You could have just run that through an ASCII converter lofl. even less difficult.
You asked for it... The next one is going to be a LOT harder.

Geez. so do they get a ship or the blueprints to a ship?

    1 ship.

Why do i get the **** up feeling that this entire blood amber thing is about to come full circle conspiracy level ****? That report makes vega conflict into a microcosm for whats going on in the real world. And where the hell did you guys come up with the algol/demon star thing. You guys at kix have put a spin on vega that seems a little bit... Apocalyptic would be the best word to use. W.T.F? Well now we know that the revolting peasants are always caught in the middle.

All correct answers should have been held & a winner chosen at random... Give peeps on different timezones a chance... Or even for just word to get out... By kixeye own admission only a small % of active players frequent the forums :(

Thank your for pointing that out! That was just stupid to put a contest up at 3am when a small amount of players would see it...they know where their players are located...that was dumb...contests shouldn't be first to answer wins when you have a global community..I thought the gaming team knew gaming?

I think this is great and a step in a good direction!!!..... Not to mention that I just recently talked about how we used to do contests etc, and haven't for a looooooooong time, so it feels like my comment was kinda taken to heart.

If I could critique the contest for just a moment to help with further contests.....

      1. Should have a timeframe to allow for people from all timezones, or people not on (at work, asleep) to participate instead of "who answers first gets it...go!".

      2. Use things in contests that all, or at least most people have the chance to get.... Not everyone knows hexadecimal or even what it is.

      3. Keep em coming!

My sugestion for the next contest should be like:
1.Giving em time limit,so Everyone could actualy participate
2.The contest should be using common subject, not everyone even know what the hell is hexadecimal is,yes including me.
    Thats all,thx for reading

I suggest to use the in game news system. Meaning the message that you need to decode pop up when you login to the game. Then you answer by messaging the customer support system. The winner decided by the time laps between message pop up and your reply.

Everyone can participate this way and not first come first serve

What ship do they get? Is it one that others can obtain, or something like the blood raven that only one (or in this case, 2) people have
they can chose from iron star ships like freyja, hurricane, heretic, python.vigilante, machete

Shame it's not any ship, I'd take a Rag.

But that's kinda the point of having things encoded: not everyone can immediately figure it out. If it was just in morse or something else simple, we'd have the same exact issue of it being solved in roughly 20 minutes. That's unsatisfying to those who DO figure it out, and of course gives no window of opportunity for anyone else to take a crack at it.

Furthermore, VEGA Conflict has a surprisingly high number of people with computer related careers, so it WILL have to be something really tough to stump all of us long enough. If you've never been apart of alternate reality games before and don't know what to look for, you're **** out of luck. Solving hard stuff is the name of the game.

(Read up on the Portal ARGs if you want more tips, they're one of the best examples of this sort of thing done right. And hey, prevents Kixeye from going the super easy route of just copying those strategies directly. I'm on to you @CM LXC !)

One thing I'd like to suggest. instead of using things that most people either don't know about or that. just to plain stupid to know. maybe do deciphering that more people would know about. for example on a really easy basis. A=1, B=2,C=3.... etc. but making it more difficult than that obviously.

I Don't participate in these. If CM LXC would like to know a couple of different codes that better fit with what I was saying. Or more of what I was tring to describe. I'd be more than happy to share with him.

What you are talking about is a substitution cipher. Could always use a VIC cipher, now wouldn't that be fun.

That would be fun. plus since there are so many ciphers out there you would have to track down the correct one, to solve it ;) XD

Look up what a VIC cipher is. It's not horrible, but it would slow people down lol.
Dues ex is a great series, waiting for the new one actually.

Yeah, our lore writer is awesome. When all the pieces are revealed, it will be interesting to see what theories you guys come up with. I'll be there to provide hints, as always.

This is only the first contest. There will be more of these in different timezones. I'm not fond of picking winners "out of a hat" so to speak. It cheapens peoples work.

I absolutely would do that if I could. Unfortunately, this contest is me and one designer. I don't have the resources or ability to put anything into the game.

The portal ARGs were the inspiration for this contest. I was one of the people working on decoding it.

The problem with substitution cyphers is you don't know you're on the right track until you crack it. When you make a puzzle like this, you want the rush of recognizing the format, so you can work to decode it. It's not fun to get what the puzzle deisnger is thinking.

Note from the designer: You really shouldn't have put the idea of VIC Cipher in my head. Lex wants a puzzle that spans a timezone, the VIC Cipher remained uncracked by the NSA for years.

Well you could just repost the page in cipher, or some other crap. Not too difficult, still a bastard unless you take some time. Think of it this way. Some of us could actually wake up, and a real offer could be rewarded.
