Base defenses

A question for those people who have seen this situation from either the defensive or the offensive side: when someone puts out multiple fleets in defense of their base, and someone else tries to attack the base, does the attacker have to go through at most one fleet (the one facing him on his attack line in to the base) or does he have to fight and defeat all of the fleets arrayed in defense before he can attack the base?

He has to kill all fleets that are around the base before he can attack the actual base.

Ok, then does his fleet fight them one at a time, or does he have to engage all of the massed fleets at once?

Is there any way to combine fleets so that more than the basic 6 ships in one fleet can fight together as one force?

Technically he is in the right place, tho some of the questions seem to be more easily answered by throwing a Harrier around and figuring stuff out by himself. But, there will be noobs in this game and sadly we must entertain them.
