Here it is...I'd say this is the basic layout I am sticking with ...Long range guns on the perimeter...Faster short range weapons in the middle... Evenly spread out as you can see...ya' No need to over think this...Simple and stuff, Although it would be kinda fun to spread it out a bit more...image

    Wrong idea methinks. Put the long range behind the short range. That way people can't just saddle up to the long range with Harriers and simply dodge the Gauss while firing back with Railguns. Those Lasers are only good against Harriers if they get close enough or Rancors with weapons other than Railguns.

    Does anyone know if asteroids impede the movement of ships in a base attack?  As well, if they will block a shot if they are in front of the intended target?

    Not really. You set up your base as you like, then use labs and any other less important modules to "bridge" between the OP and your miners.
