Base hitting.

Base hitting seems fairly easy once you get a rancor.
With gauss guns and their range bonus, they out range the lasers most people have in their bases.
With their speed they can easily move out of the way of fire from heavy gauss guns, although only when moving forward. However they don't need to move any other direction but forward since they fire sideways and can thus do a good old fashion broadside bombardment while driving past the defenses.

In effect they can circle a base endlessly without being hit as long as you don't make too sharp a turn. For example in this base I circled it taking out all the defenses keeping all the other ships back until they were all down.image

So my question is, how do you defend against this other than simply having such high armor (one of only two possible solutions atm) on the turrets that they can't be killed during a single pass by as this is just one rancor, I'm sure two or 3 will kill a turret for sure no matter the health.

    With the current features, I don't think it is possible...maybe some kind of space mine that would force someone to turn? But that might then make Rancors not strong enough...base defense fleet might work

    I think of course this is why they have longer range turrets and ones that different types so you can't protect against them all great tactic though....

    Yes but right now, the first way that Matthew mentions is ok, but the second one is an automatic "I win" button for bases. It would stop any tactic

    rancor < heavy polaron lasers
    heavy polaron lasers < ???

    Right now if you don't have polaron lasers, you're a farm. If you do have polaron lasers, your base can't be destroyed.
    It's either impossible to attack or impossible to defend.

    I would rather see a good balance between defense and offence. I would like a bit of a challenge instead of farming lvl20 bases for relatively no damage and I think people deserve a chance to get into my base.

    I give people a chance to get into mine, but it is hard as many time out

    I use one rancor that's it I figure if I can get in with one 5 would be easy so.... I challenge myself but broadswords can attack the polearms but it will be interesting to do a mix of rancor and broads, maybe two rancors to distract the gause with 4 broads dropping torps behind

    Easy, I am know using 3 torp longbows and 1 rancor...leveled all bases I attacked with them so far

    yeah basically it has gotten pretty easy wants you have right tech to win at bases, I'm trying to get ready for when alot of bases have torps.

    You can test my base with torps in ~10 hours(doing another upgrade first)

    i agree, bases are a walkover. 
    especially if you are a tec ahead. maybe when we get the plasma torp defences we can stop people coming in.

    a mix of polaron and mass drivers works too. polaron kills rancors, and mass drivers kill longbows

    Not anymore...

    Plasma Charger is now the top DPS defense weapon that cannot be outranged by any ship weapon.
    I don't play much anymore =(

    I wouldn't use gauss guns on the rancors like flo said i would use longbows and rancors with torp1 or 2. Just my opinion

    Perhaps you missed the update. Torps are no longer big on range, Destroyers are crap. So both options you suggested are dead. It is time to re-strategize.

    The game and weapon balance has completely changed over the last month. I wouldn't be surprised to see more big changes coming until the closed beta tag is removed.

    Honestly though, currently it doesn't look like kixeye is fine tuning the balance, but instead doing complete over hauls of the effectiveness and usability of weapons in the attempt to get them into a position where they are all useful and not just a select few.

    The actual balance was unclear for a quite some time due to the lack of in-game progress of even the lead players (those furthest ahead) and as a result what seemed OP was for the most part only OP as no one had researched required tech that could effectively counter it.

    As for polarons, they became balanced as soon as they recieved a 500 range nerf during an update the better part of a month ago. They were only really OP when grouped up anyway and it wasn't much of a big deal. Recent changes will have shaken all that up though.

    Anyway, the balance has greatly to the point this thread is no longer relavent.
