A small while ago I finished the Battle Pirates - Story thread I thought about it afterwards and considered doing a short series of stories focusing on life on Michaels Island. I didn't think it would come around this quickly but... I got bored again.
Owen's Shipyard
Tale One
Present Day, Senior Classroom, Michaels Island, Sector 73
Looking over the classroom Tech Captain Owen's experienced eye could see those that would crew his ships in the future. The oldest of the children was about to turn 16 years old and would face the choice everyone faced, join the Island's pirates or to serve in one of the island based professions. He could see the warriors amongst them, already having chosen their path either by choice or to follow a family member. He sat back in his wheelchair and looked at them all "Your teacher Mr McKenna has requested that I speak with you today and remind you of some of this island's greatest accomplishments and its most devastating failures." He said almost straight away a hand rose.
"Will you tell us of the Triton?" The young boy asked Owen responded with a smile.
"No, the Triton may have been given her name but she has not yet proven herself." Owen said disappointing the boy "instead I'll take us back to one of our earliest forages out into the Forsaken Seas. During those early days when we first discovered the Draconian Imperial Empire we also began to discover and understand their technology." Owen said "unfortunately not everything went as we planned."
Eighteen years before, Owen's office, Michaels Island, Sector 73
"They found another piece of that Strike Missile boss" tech Schmee said entering Owen's office, the Tech Captain smiled, it was the last piece the targetting system finally after months of fighting the Draconians they had finally found all the parts for the D51-L Strike Missile according to reports it was lighter, harder hitting and faster firing than the Rapier III Heat-seeking Missile they were currently using. "I think it would work well on the new Big ****." Schmee said smirking at the use of the tech's use of the nick name.
"It's Battle Barge Schmee, the Captain already said our nickname wasn't good enough for official usage." Owen said shaking his head "we have Battle Barge Six slated for us as a test bed vessel but we're going to need to wait for its completion for now we'll test it on land see if it is as good as we think. Have Dr McManus prepare a Rapier Battery along the rear of the Island; we'll set this thing up and test it at the same time." Owen said, it was always best to try and work out how a weapon would behave on dry land before it went into active service.
Several days later Owen stood beside Dr Rachel McManus, head of weapons development on the island near the rear area far from anything critical, the only thing close to them was one of the wind turbines and it was at least one hundred-and-fifty metres away, "So you think this is better than the Rapier III?" She asked quietly, Rachel was a young woman for her position graduating quickly she'd followed her mother's path into research and now represented the technical crews on the Captain's Table. She also took challenges to her equipment very seriously; the new Draconian technology interested her but also threatened the weapons her people were developing.
"It could be" Owen said cryptically "it's certainly lighter." that couldn't be disputed the Rapier missile was an effective medium ranged weapons system with a solid warhead however the missile relied on heat-seeking sensors to find its target adding significant bulk and drag to the weapon and to the launcher. Looking at the two systems side by side Owen guessed the Draconian system was maybe thirty tons lighter perhaps a little more.
"True" Rachel couldn't dispute "we'll see six shots each well test destructive capability and accuracy?" Owen nodded Rachel reached for her radio "firing team, fire when ready." She ordered the three men surrounding the Rapier launch system did a little work then fired the first missile. The Rapier III covered the forty metres rapidly before slamming into the target resulting in a decent sized explosion, Rachel smiled triumphantly. The Strike Missile followed hitting a target at the same distance. The Missiles continued firing out of six missiles fired five Rapiers had hit, out of the Strike Missiles only four had hit so far with one missile remaining to fire "last one Owen."
"Indeed, still with only four hits the strikes have done as much if not more damage than the Rapiers, they are lighter and are prepared easier." Owen reminded her ribbing slightly, they were on the same side but a little healthy competition never hurt. "Firing team fire last missile." Owen ordered into the radio handset. The last Strike Missile launched this time at the furthest target, the missile arced high into the sky then started to come back down Owen looked at it and thought there was something wrong but stayed quiet.
"Firing team detonate missile!" Rachel almost shouted into the radio after a few more moments as the missile seemed to level out instead of continuing to fall towards its tactic.
"We can't detonate the missile, it's not responding to orders." The reply came the missile flew directly towards the wind turbine, fortunately the fuel ran out before the missile reached the turbine, the flare at the rear of the missile dying before it slammed into the ground exploding.
"So slightly less accurate" Rachel said smiling Owen looked at the new crater on the landscape and nodded, at sea that wouldn't matter much.

It took nearly three weeks to build a new Marauder with the Strike Missile, other ships had already been placed on the priority build list and the missile still needed further testing. According to Rachel the missile wasn't ready it still miss fired on occasion however this was seen as less of a problem at sea where the only thing it could hit was more sea. Placed on a Marauder-hull the ship was placed in an escort roll with a Rapier III Marauder and the first three Battle Barge type vessels. The Captain had ordered them taken up against a Draconian convoy in an attempt to capture resources and possibly some Draconian intelligence. Standing on the bridge with Commander Mike Collins Tech Captain Owen was in unfamiliar territory, rarely did he take to sea with the ships of the Island's growing navy but this particular test interested him.
"Message from flagship, we're to provide covering fire for the Battle Barges and avoid direct fire from enemy vessels." The communications officer reported.
"What do we have?" Collins said quietly raising his binoculars to his hands approaching at speed he could see four of the Draconian destroyer type craft long and thin like needles they were armed with the same number of weapons as a Marauder and were used as escort craft. In this case a large Draconian Battleship dominated the Draconian formation. "We'll take the left flank; have Marauder ten keep close we'll see if we can draw the three destroyers away open up a defence hole for the Barges.
"That'll expose us to some fire Captain." The Helm officer warned him
"Only from the front ship, it has missiles that can reach us; the others are shirt range vessels which we won't let get close enough." Collins promised. The two Marauders moved to get as a pair between them they carried as much as one and a half Battle Barges and their weapons were missile based unlike the cannon based barges in this formation. "Fire when ready, have Marauder Ten do the same." As they closed Marauder Twelve's Draconian missiles gained lock far quicker and at greater range than the Rapier missiles on Marauder Ten. Immediately all three launchers began to pepper the three Draconian vessels with missiles, Soon after Marauder Ten's Rapiers joined them swiftly cutting down the Draconian escort craft leaving only the main ship and its remaining escort.
"Sir! Two of our missiles have altered planned course, homing in on the Battleship!" The weapons officer reported the two missiles turned almost in mid-air turning towards the massive Draconian vessel slamming high into the vessel's superstructure. The large ship had been heading for the three Battle Barges closing on it however now it turned towards them.
"Helm, alter course away from that Battleship full speed, have Marauder Ten cut in close this could get a little dicey." Collins ordered the Marauder wasn't designed to take on big ships like the Battleship; it didn't have the armour to survive the kind of firepower the Battleship could put out. Missiles began to slam into the sea around them the missiles exploding on impact "that was close, helm alter course at randomly." Collins ordered then massive explosive mortar shells began to slam into the sea sending showers of water over the ships "**** that was too close, helm continue altering speed and course, weapons do we have a firing solution."
"Not a great one, they are on the edge of our firing window. Marauder Ten reports they are completely outranged."
"Launch them anyway, son, we may as well." Owen said quietly so only Collins could hear the Commander nodded and strike missiles quickly began to lift from the decks one or two of the missiles hitting but nothing to dissuade the massively armoured Battleship further missiles and mortar rounds slammed into the ocean around them, the explosion from one mortar tore over Marauder Ten burning its deck and crew. The ship's speed dropped off almost immediately and the Battleship began to close.
"Helm, we stand with Marauder Ten, bring us around put us between the Battleship and Marauder Ten." Collins ordered "you picked the wrong ship sir, looks like we'll be swimming home." He said to Owen, the Tech smiled in response.
"Perhaps not." Owen said pointing to the Battleship's port side through the smoke the three Battle Barges could be seen closing on the Battleship. From the decks of Marauder Twelve and Ten missiles began to rapidly raise into the air striking at the Battleship causing little damage however, suddenly they were not the Battleships main concern. From its rear and port side the Captain's three Battle Barges were shrugging off the missile and mortar fire from the Battleship as they closed on the Draconian vessel. Almost as one twelve Thud Cannon Mark IVs tore into the Battleship's armour tearing into the vessel from the rear they ripped the superstructure of the Draconian vessel to pieces, very quickly the Draconian vessel was listing heavily, its guns silent the vessel disabled, within ten minutes the ship was gone sunken beneath the waves no Draconians were found in the wreckage and very little else to salvage. The bridge speakers crackled to life.
"Commander Collins, I said not to get yourself into trouble, you almost cost us our lead Tech." The Captain said berating Marauder Twelve's Commander Owen grabbed the radio
"Captain, I wanted to see the missiles in action, tell Miss McManus they've proved their worth we're keeping them." Owen said cutting back at the Captain, Commander Collins looked astonished by Owen's words but the Tech smiled. "Don't worry; I know how to handle him."
Present Day, Seniors Classroom, Michaels Island, Sector 73
"Commander Collins never did get over the shock he could never understand me and the Captain, we were from different worlds but we understood each other’s place." Owen said looking at the classroom "even when he became Captain Collins and had all the privileges of that rank he never did call me or any of the Captain's by their name. Unfortunately his Sea Wolf-class Destroyer was destroyed engaging Kixeye's Ocean in Sector One. Commander Collins unfortunately went down with his ship like so many others." Owen said quietly "the Strike Missile however became our primary light missile weapon, we've never been able to get the slight bugs out her targeting systems but it's an effective piece of kit especially when we combine it with other little toys we've developed." Owen finished "any questions?"
"Do you guys still use Battle Barge Six as a test-ship?" One of the students asked, Battle Barge Six was the only one of its kind still operated by the island designated as a training vessel it rarely saw combat but like Marauder One it held a special place within the island's naval forces.
"We still have her, some of the new weaponry is a little big for her but we can always use if for range finding and recovery of some of our failed experiments. We'll always keep the ship around; you never know when you'll want to try something new or stupid." Owen said half-jokingly.
"I think that's enough questions for the tech." Mr McKenna said quietly raising to his feet "don't worry I'm sure he'll have something else to tell us soon."
Hope you enjoy, I may do one or two more, I'll post them here

I'd probably be surprised if Owen found a blueprint of the Neue Ziel-class on his desk.
Sector 135
I don't normally do first person entries so I hope it come out right
Tale Two
A Day in the life of Schmee
Michaels Island, Sector 73
How would I describe a day in the life of Schmee, Second Level Technical Engineer? Well first thing is I get up, normally about 0530hrs earlier than most of Michaels Island, the Famous Captain once said he thought I was insane to be awake and at work at that time but each to their own. There are benefits to being up so early, I see each morning rise and have always believed it adds a spring to my step often much to Owen's annoyance. Normally each morning I'd head for the central mess for breakfast, I could eat in my own quarters they are large enough but sometimes what you hear in the mess is worth the trouble of eating in a crammed room.
This morning was special however and instead of heading for the mess I grabbed what the Techs call an "Owen Special" which is little more than a bacon softie and a coffee to go. This morning I was presenting Owen with my second set of plans for the Leviathan-class Battleship, I gave him the plans nearly three months ago and he turned them down straight, said that he'd rather eat Junior Tech Marshall's hat, well this morning I'm brining the sauce with me for Owen's lunch.
Entering Owen's office it's nice to be somewhere familiar and so close to the harbour front, from Owen's office we can see the shipyard, constructing the Island's fourth Battle Barge and the Dock repairing and preparing ships for duty on the seas. The usual greetings are made as I enter Owen a small round man with a jolly face and a smile no-one could dismiss, wasn't best pleased when after his usual morning briefing I placed the plans on the desk "Schmee, I've said it once I'll say it a dozen times the Leviathan won't sail. We don't have the room to build her, we'd need to expand the shipyard just to fit the hull, and even if this grand miracle of yours came off we don't have the engines to propel her." He'd said in his go happy manner.
"Tech Captain, Dr McManus team is developing new engines and thrusters that will move the ship like it was a Big B... Battle Barge" I protested "we can build her." I said, the other techs nodded their agreements but still Schmee looked unconvinced. "We can give this Island something true to be proud of." I promised, even I knew I was winning this argument "tell you what, if you agree you don't have to eat Marshall's hat" I said with a giggle that went through all the techs including Owen.
Just as Owen opened his mouth to speak, to cast judgement down on my grand plans or to build them up and send us towards something great, the Island's alarm signals sounded. They weren't the same pulsing sound of a ship returning from combat, instead it was of a constant tone, it could mean only one thing the unthinkable we were under attack our island was being attacked. "To your combat ready stations" Owen ordered us we all charged from his office, during times of battle we were all expected to serve the island in other areas. Mine was combat damage repair.
As we left Owen's office we each headed for our station, I was no more than twenty metres from the small office before the mortars fell, three massive explosive shells. The first landed just beyond the shipyard however both the second and third slammed into the shipyard all around Owen's office pylons and girders fell, the blast threw me and the other techs through the air slamming us into the dirt many metres away. By chance I remained conscious, rolling over; I looked at the shipyard collapsing in on itself. "OWEN!" I screamed, I could not see the Tech Captain, looking around I could see the other techs seeing what I saw, fearing the worse. "Techs, with me!" I said we had battle damage to repair, this time at our own place of work. Behind us further mortars were falling on the base, the defence cannons and missiles were firing constantly, we didn't know if the battle went for or against us none of us were armed but we all knew our duty.
The shipyard was nothing but a mass of broken and twisted metal but that didn't stop us, pushing into Owen's offices we lifted, pushed or pulled the wreckage out of the way making our way to the Office. Amazingly most of the office had survived the mortar attack, only a single girder falling from the roof. It was amazing that we found Owen still alive in all this madness but pinned under the huge girder his leg pinned in place by that one girder. Of all the damned things to be hit by Owen got in the way of one blasted piece of metal. Between the six of us there was no moving it, the biggest thing you've ever seen, we tried for what felt like an hour but was actually less than ten minutes. Sometime during this Owen woke up "you're damned fools!" He'd shouted at us "the Island is more important than me!" He'd screamed angry that we were trying to save him, he's never admitted it to anyone as far as I know but I think he was proud that we'd come to help him.
Eventually it was his choice that saved us from the decision... it was the first time I'd ever seen that look in someone's face. Absolute certainty. It's strange looking at someone like that, it seems so obvious when they speak the words you wonder why you missed it. It's bloody scary; to be honest with you I never want to see anything like it again. We were getting nowhere with the girder when Owen croaked "take the leg." We all looked at him stunned we couldn't believe his words "it's gone I can't feel my foot, I can't move it, take it and get us all out of here." He said before passing out, we all looked at each other like the other had just been given the power of god, you'd think that it would be simple but inflicting that kind of damage and pain on a friend is never easy, it never was supposed to be.
We tied three belts around Owen's leg just above the knee, he said his leg was gone but we knew this was going to be a mess. One simple blow would probably be enough "like chopping wood" one said. I'll tell you this it's not, thankfully it took only a single blow to sever the crushed limb blood spirted out but our belts did the trick, Owen barely made a single noise we thought he was dead for a moment. We dragged him through the rubble to a medical team waiting outside, they were shocked to find only Owen needing help, but his injury was enough to keep them going.
Handing the Tech Captain over to the med-techs it was just the start of our day, some pirate named Blackheart had caused damage to just about every single structure on the island, repairs would likely take a week probably two. We worked from building to building helping rescue trapped people, in other places making a structure safe. We heard as the day went on the Captain and another pirate named Rick had driven off what was left of Blackheart's force but he did enough to keep us busy for the rest of the day. By the end of the day I couldn't face the hospital, I knew Owen was alive but his leg was a lost cause, the damage done by the girder and the axe had destroyed the limb. I knew doctors could give him an artificial one but I knew what Owen was like, it was going to be a long recovery.
It took nearly three weeks to get the island fully up to strength again. So much that had been planned was cancelled or put on the back burner Senator Michaels had declared himself all powerful while half the Council was dead or injured. We went back to the drawing board on a lot of things; it gave me time to work on some plans refine some ideas. We rebuilt Owen's office; I'd take to sitting in there while working on the plans, out the windows we could see the new Battle Barge sitting unfinished no work getting done on her by Senator Michaels order. Then one day, a Friday of all days, I entered the office Owen was sitting there in a wheelchair "Second Rate Tech you are late." Owen said as I entered still all smiles, he was right it was almost 0800hrs I was an hour later than usual but there was little to do. My eyes drifted to the stump that used to be the Tech Captain's leg. "You did the only thing you could, son." Owen said quietly "you and the boys saved my life, if it cost a leg, I can live with that" he said chucking "no pun intended." He said turning to the table, so been up to much.
"Not really Senator Michaels has stopped most construction work; all we can do is make plans and hope that sometime soon the island takes its head out of the sand."
"That's today Chief Tech Schmee." Owen said smiling as he reached into the desk pulling out a new rank insignia, it didn't mean much but was still nice to see. "I need you to get crews on that Battle Barge get it completed, then we start work on this." He said flicking over a page revealing the Leviathan plans "if Marshall's hat had survived the attack I'd eat it, we need her firepower and armour." Owen said quietly "the next time you have an idea voice it a little louder Schmee, I'll listen." He promised rolling the chair back slightly "we're going to have a busy few months Schmee, I'm not going to be most mobile for a bit, can I count on you to keep these boys busy?"
"I'll do all I can for you" I vowed immediately it wasn't an empty promise, it was something that I'd never been more sure about in all my life. I served with Tech Captain Owen until the day he decided to retire, I stood by him at the end, I watched as he was returned to the sea. He made an impact on my life it was the one thing that I needed to realise my potential, it's what we all need, someone or something that makes a difference in our lives, changes what we are looking at, at what we believe is possible and at where we are aiming for.
Make sure you find yours and never let go.

Tale Three
Senior Classroom, Present Day, Michaels Island
"Today we have a tale from former Senator and retired Captain Michaels" Mr McKenna said to the class of senior students. After the success of Tech Captain Owen's story Michaels had agreed to tell his own tale.
"What I am about to tell you is of classified origin however it is more tale than fact." Captain Michaels said quietly "about five years after the Battle of Sector 1 between the UEF and Kixeye Corporation a new faction arose within the Draconian Imperial Empire, known simply as the Elites under the command of a Commander Vassago. Vassago disposed of all other commanders within the Draconian forces and installed his rule over the remaining people. With them they brought a new type of Battleship known as the Neue Ziel, a formidable vessel." He said quietly "it had destroyed everything that had encountered it but I was convinced that we needed information about it and of the Elite faction." He continued "what happened was not entirely to plan."
Classified Location, Draconian Territory, Sector 43
In close formation the Five Sea Wolves of Captain Michaels fleet had monitored dozens of Draconian vessels moving in and delivering supplies to one of their bases supplying the construction of their newest ship the fabled Neue Ziel-class Super Battleship, the moonless sky hiding the Sea Wolves in the darkness. So far Michaels had seen several reports regarding the ship's capabilities and its battle record according to one report the ship had destroyed ten Leviathan-class Battleships by itself. Double the firepower and triple the armour that Michaels had at his disposal, finally the Draconians seemed happy to deploy it. "Captain Michaels, we have movement from the Draconian Base one huge ship, it's about the size of a Dreadnought."
"Continue gathering data Lieutenant Clarke" Michaels said turning towards the Helm officer "bring the fleet about, keep us at maximum range with that ship." The Sea Wolf Destroyers began to pivot in position, as the Neue Ziel came fully into view. "And now we stare into the belly of the beast." Michaels said quietly looking at the ship it was days like this that he almost regretted choosing to become a Captain. After the battle in Sector 1, and the Captain's disappearance, he'd thought it was his duty to reclaim his family’s position commanding the defenders of Michaels Island.
"Sir! The ship is turning towards us, weapons turrets beginning to track."
"We're still out of their maximum range" Michaels said quietly focusing on the ship as its turrets turned towards the Sea Wolves. Behind the ship four Draconian Battleships appeared to be following it from the Draconian Outpost. Suddenly missiles lifted from the vessel all seven launchers firing as one, the missiles covered the distance between the Neue Ziel and the Sea Wolves, smashing into Sea Wolf twelve. The Destroyer exploded into flame as the missiles burrowed deep into the hull detonating the ammo stores.
"They seem to have enhanced range on those Assault Missiles" Michaels first officer Commander O'Neil said.
"Indeed, Helm all ahead full get us the hell out of here, they don't want us escaping with what we know." Michaels ordered all four remaining Sea Wolves began to accelerate but the Neue Ziel was keeping pace with them. Another flight of missiles consumed Sea Wolf Fourteen.
"We commit those souls” Commander O'Neil said as the Sea Wolf began to disappear under the waves "not our grandest day sir."
"Perhaps not" Michaels said looking at the map the Sea Wolf was one of the swiftest ships of the Sea, Michaels ships all carried enhanced engineers specifically for this mission and still they were being caught by the Draconian vessel. The missiles on the remaining three Sea Wolves began to fire defensively Strike Missiles and Cutlass impacting on the Neue Ziel but making little impact on the Draconian vessel. Behind Michaels vessel the remaining two Sea Wolves formed up behind them nose to stern providing them armour and weapons as a barrier between the Draconians and the Michaels vessel.
"Sacrificing themselves." O'Neil said looking to his Captain, Michaels nodded he hadn't asked them to make this sacrifice nor did he believe that he would have but the crews had still made the choice. Missiles struck out engulfing another of the Sea Wolves, return fire against the Neue Ziel seemed to bounce off causing little damage. More missiles from the Draconian vessel consumed the last Sea Wolf leaving only Michaels vessel "continue firing, we'll go down swinging." O'Neil said as another volley of assault missiles from the Neue Ziel launched into the air.
"Evasive manoeuvres!" Michaels ordered but it was too late the missiles were already on target. Even as Michaels Sea Wolf made its final evasive moves three of the Assault Missiles slammed into the Sea Wolf. The ship was thrown from side to side by the impacts its hull holed in several places water rushing into the vessel, Michaels could hear the weapons turrets continuing to fire in defiance but Captain Michaels knew better "launch the distress beacon" slapping the intercom control he spoke with the whole ship "all hands this is Captain Michaels, abandon ship. I repeat all hands this is Captain Michaels abandon ship."
Throughout the ship crewmen including Michaels rushed to the escape pods, leaving the ships hull the night air bit at Michaels skin, the ice cold sea spray freezing his body. Michaels could not help but stop and look at the massive Draconian vessel pursuing them; their enemies weapons had fallen silent as if they were savouring their victory. Now they would be able to pick up the survivors from Michaels vessels and through them find their island. Michaels stared at the vessel and cursed his failure, he damned the Draconian vessel.
Suddenly the entire port side of the Neue Ziel exploded in fire, the fire lit up the night sky and the force pushed Michaels back up against the bulkhead "what on Earth?" Michaels whispered, moments later the Neue Ziel was hit by a second round of explosions. Michaels searched the sea and suddenly saw it a single Forsaken Floating Fortress charging down at the Neue Ziel firing missiles, mortars and cannons, Michaels searched the sea and could see no other ship, the Fortress was on a suicide mission still closing on the Draconian vessel. Focusing on the Fortress Michaels could almost make out the name on the side of the Fortress "it can't be..."
Present Day, Senior Classroom, Michael Island
"It can't be what?" Donald asked standing up from his desk
"Mr Davis, please allow Captain Michaels to finish."
"It's fine Mr McKenna, I think perhaps it is time for questions." Michaels said quietly a small smile beginning to form "what I am about to tell you, will not be found on any report on this island nor will it be in any database other than my own personal one." Michaels said "this ship I saw that night was the Floating Fortress that had been commanded by the Captain during the battle of Sector 1 against Kixeye Corporation. His attack saved me and my crew from our deaths. This ship had been repaired but I knew the ship better than to mistake it." Michaels said quietly "unfortunately no-one else saw the vessel and it did not reappear again."
"How can anyone explain your escape from the Draconians?" Molly asked looking confused.
"According to the final intelligence finding the missile fire from our Sea Wolves struck the assault missile stores on the Neue Ziel creating a secondary explosion that tore through the ship and destroyed her. My crew received a commendation for their actions in saving the survivors of our ship and all the others and my experience, my story was quietly swept under the carpet, it was that or my crew lost their awards to something no-one could prove."
"But you did see the Captain's ship." Another member of the class said.
"Yes Jaylen, I saw the Captain's ship, it saved me as the Captain saved this island several times and I for one am eternally grateful for that." Around the class many of the students lowered their heads giving thanks for the sacrifices of those who died in Sector 1 and had died in other conflicts since then. It was the world they lived in everyone lost and gained from the seas, they lived off of it and they were returned to it. "The seas sometimes play tricks on us and sometimes delivers exactly what we are required to see."

Tale Four
Sector 73, Michaels Island, Main Briefing Room
Most of the Captains had left Michaels Island and returned to their own fleets as part of the United Expeditionary Fleet. The vote had gone in favour of an expedition to Sector 1 to stop Kixeye Corporation; together they had proven they could keep the Draconians under control now they would prove that they could hold back Kixeye. Now the Captain stood in the Main hall thinking over what had been decided and what they had ahead of them, it would take months just to reach Sector 1 assuming they reached no delays along the way and the Captain knew that they were likely to encounter plenty of pirates hostile to them. He almost didn't see Flag Admiral Artan B. Duinhir approaching off to one side "Admiral, I'd thought you would be returning to your ship?"
"I was on my way, but I thought I would pass this over to you now." Duinhir said placing a disk on the table.
"What's this Admiral?"
"Design plans for my Enterprise-class Carrier and the aircraft designs we have created and that work." Duinhir said "I've also added several of my tried and tested Floating Fortress designs, since I've seen you are experimenting." He said smirking "gives you a little foot-up on the competition. There's also an additional file on something my people are calling a Turbofan engine, they think it'll be the next generation of propulsion for our aircraft, try not to laugh at the video." The Captain looked Duinhir questionably "one of our first and not most glorious tests."
"Why pass this on now? I thought you said you would pass this information only over to those that left with the fleet to Sector 1, your insurance on their participation."
"Yes, indeed that was the case; I'm not entirely convinced they would all go if there wasn't something in it for them." Duinhir said fixing his eyes on the Captain. "But I don't think that is the case with you." He continued "your first child was just born but you are a driving force behind this raid despite it more than likely being a one way trip. That tells me it all."
"Well Admiral, I don't know how you see this ending but I plan on returning." The Captain said confidently.
"Of course Captain, just remember keep your head down." Duinhir said leaving the room, at the door a pair of marines joined the Admiral. As the Admiral left the room the Captain's wife Dr Rachel McManus joined him at the table.
"Looks like I have some extra homework while you are away." She said quietly picking up the tape.
"Where's the baby?" He asked looking around
"Asleep, my mother is with her." Rachel said quietly "so you don't think this is a one way trip?"
"I wouldn't be going if I thought it was." He said moving behind her wrapping his arms around her shoulders "I'll be coming back."
"Don't make promises unless you can keep them." Rachel said her hands still holding the tape but her eyes focused on the rear window of the room. Turning his wife to face him he took her in his arms and held her close, the Captain planned to return, Kixeye had taken enough from him.
Three Weeks Later
Michaels Island, Research and Development, Sector 73
Entering the office Tech Captain Owen could see Dr Rachel McManus hunched over her desk shaking her head "Doctor, problems?"
"Owen! Not too much for you" she said rising giving him a hug "just the information we got from Admiral Duinhir, and the latest test of that engine."
"I heard, the aircraft tore through the hanger back wall, shot across the far hill and smashed into the sea." Owen said a small smile "No-one died, only minor injuries, Schmee's team should be able to fix the damage in a few days."
"True, but the prototype is a complete write-off, we're back to step one." She said returning to her desk "the hull designs Duinhir provided with us just isn't big enough for an aircraft with this engine."
"My techs had the same feelings and to be honest we'd prefer spending the metal on something else, like three Fortresses." Owen confirmed the metal costs of Duinhir's carriers were 'excessive' and that was being polite. "Do you have a drawing of the aircraft?" Owen asked ships were his business but he wasn't against helping out.
"One better" Rachel said pressing a couple of buttons the entire desk lit up and her aircraft appeared in 3D wireframe. The engines placed about half way along the body in the middle the wing.
"Fancy toy" Owen remarked.
"Didn't you get one? We salvaged two from the last Draconian Raid. You were due to get one as well" Rachel said
"Ah yes, this is the thing Schmee wanted to install in the office, I told them to bin it waste of space." Owen said smirking as he realized. "I think I see your problem, instead of having the engines like that how about like this?" Owen asked changing some of the controls despite his claims to hate technology he knew exactly what he was doing. The changes moved the engines to a more upward angle more like the V-22s operated by Kixeye Corporation.
"You mean have it use VTOL or STOL?" Rachel said quietly Owen looked slightly lost "Vertical Take-off and Landing or Short Take-off and Landing." She explained "less runway more fuel used. We don't have any experience with that neither has Duinhir, I wouldn't know where to start."
"Kixeye Corporation has, their V-22s are proof of the concept. Have our supply ships collect any wreckage they find the next time they meet the UEF, take it back here and we can pull it apart if we can get it to work then we can build a ship around it."
"You think so?" Rachel asked unconvinced, it was something completely untested with untested engines and now an untested hull. Owen just smiled mischievously looking forward to the challenge.

Michaels Island, Research and Development, Sector 73
Supply ships had returned to Michaels Island with tons of supplies of broken V-22 aircraft and of aircraft from Duinhir's Enterprise which had been missed during recoveries. They now littered on of Michaels Island's warehouses taking up space normally occupied by resource crates. Both Dr Rachel McManus and Tech Captain Owen had now been pouring over piece of wreckage for more than two weeks and finally figured out an idea, instead of building a full sized aircraft they had built a model using prototype turbine engines. The model was about a quarter the size of what the full sized craft would be "you think it will fly?"
"Of course" Rachel said "Lieutenant Beckett has been practicing all week in the simulator, this is only a test."
"A test of the first ever controlled flying aircraft. A test that the Council will have to sign off on for a full sized aircraft to be constructed. A test that could derail this entire program."
"It'll fly" Rachel said confidently "Lieutenant, take it away." She said the young twenty year old woman nodded, she'd been taken out of Stalker training for this task and at first she'd struggled to be interested in this base assignment, now however it was becoming more fun. Manipulating the small metal controller she activated the model's power-source the model was an exact miniature a glass canopy making up most of the upper nose section, a curved nose covered a short body the body tapered off leading to a lengthy double winged stabilization tail. The two turbine engines flanked the body just behind the cockpit at in the upward position.
The hum of the power source filled the warehouse before there was a quiet sound as the aircraft rose of the ground rising rapidly to about 10 metres just below the ceiling. "We're inside Lieutenant careful please." She nodded and tapered the power back slightly the aircraft dropped to about 5 metres in height.
"So it goes up and down." Owen said quietly "we're getting somewhere." He said Lieutenant Beckett smiled changing another control the twin tails moved slightly to the left and the aircraft began to turn "more promising" Owen commented again. Beckett flicked a control forward and the small engine nacelles pushed the aircraft into a forward motion "Just don't crash it." Owen warned Beckett allowed the aircraft to close on the warehouse wall before turning it around almost on the spot and immediately moving back across the room an extremely precise move for her first true test flight. "Showing off Lieutenant, didn't your parent's ever tell you, it isn't very smart." Owen stated chuckling as he watched the craft move across the room and quietly wondered if he was looking at the future of his island's forces the small craft nimble enough to avoid ground fire it could be a game changer if they could make it work with the naval ships. Already Owen was thinking of ideas on how to use it in combat and he had a name "Orca" after the great Killer Whale of the sea, this craft would hunt in packs and be feared by more than small fish.
Nine Months Later
Recovery Operations, Sector 1
The entire battle location was a mess shattered ships and aircraft dotting the sea, from all indications someone had used a huge missile to try and blow up Ocean and the remaining KIXEYE forces. Somehow Admiral Alacamenous had realized what was happening and diverted the weapon into the sea where it had created a massive tidal wave which had engulfed much of the UEF as well as the KIXEYE Corporation forces. In the middle of the sea Ocean remained active but it was half capsized and heavily on fire, its two massive support ships one covered in hundreds of containers and the other, which looked like a movable shipyard were both listing heavily in the sea and it appeared attempting to retreat from the region with the few surviving KIXEYE ships.
Together ten Leviathans and two Floating Fortress moved into Sector 1 to recover Michaels Island's dead. As they approached Sector 1 a mixed group of Leviathans, Sea Wolves and Floating Fortresses approached most with varying degrees of damage. "Communications from lead Leviathan, Senator."
"Put them on" the Senator said glancing at Captain Dean Anderson the ship's commander.
"Repeat Identify yourselves this is Rear Admiral Alfred Johnson of the Legionaries. We are conducting search and rescue operations." The man said the video screen on the Senator's ship activated, the Admiral stood in the centre of the screen he was an older man with a silver peppered moustache, his dark hair rapidly turning grey.
"I am Senator Michaels we are here to recover the survivors of the people from Michaels Island."
"Ah yes your lead Captain told me much about you, welcome to Sector 1, I wish it was under better circumstances." Johnson said "two of your Fortresses are disabled not far from the KIXEYE command ship Ocean, while another of your vessels a Leviathan is assisting with repairs. Captain Cougar's Sea Wolves are providing us with additional perimeter security."
"What of the Captain's ship and Dr McManus who was aboard?"
"We have recovered Dr McManus and her daughter, they can be made available to transport to your ship unfortunately there has been no sign of her husbands ship or its crew. We have been barely found any wreckage from the Captain's Fortress."
"Our thanks for your recovery of our people so far." Senator Michaels said cutting the communications system "Captain Anderson, deploy Oscar One." Michaels said "have the crew do a full recon of the area and then return, once we have recovered our ships we are heading home." He said Anderson nodded and issued a series of commands, on the deck of the Floating Fortress the newest weapon of Michaels Island prepared for launch. The launch facilities and additional flight crew had required the removal of one of the ship's turrets but it gave the vessel a mobile scout/strike craft. Like the test model they had developed on Michaels Island the aircraft was a twin turbine snub-nosed craft with a glass canopy, the two engines flanking the hull. Unlike the model however the fully operational craft had two small wings adjacent to the cockpit; these added balance to the aircraft while in flight and provided two places where weapons could be mounted. It had taken months to find a weapons system small enough to fit onto the craft eventually miniaturized Draconian Strike Missiles had been mated with the hull, under each wing two pods of seven missiles were mounted, finally under the nose a targeting laser and an anti-personnel mini-gun was mounted.
As the launch crew pulled back the Orca sprung from the Fortresses deck into the air the aircraft rapidly climbed and began to arc away within minutes the aircraft was gone from sight. "Sir communication from Admiral Johnson." The Communications officer said "it's a single line of text. It reads 'WE WOULD LIKE ONE OF THOSE' end of message sir." The officer said glancing over at Captain Anderson and Senator Michaels both of whom replied with a smile.
"Almost tempted to tell him to get in line." Senator Michaels whispered to Captain Anderson before turning to the officer "inform the Admiral we would be glad to open up a dialogue in the future regarding the development of the aircraft and its future deployment." The Senator replied smiling it was nice to have a bargaining chip.

The objective of life is not to arrive at the grave in a perfectly preserved body. The idea is to slide in sideways, completely used up, and say, "That was one helluva ride!"
Tale Five
Paraguma Island, Location Classified, New Republic Territory
Flag Admiral Artan Barcius Duinhir walked across the massive bay of the subterranean test facility that was buried deep within Paraguma Islands command centre. The facility connected all of the base’s labs, rocket launching pad and outpost building together by a network of tunnels. In the old Republic days it was known as a Castle Byran, but now they just called it the catacombs.
Duinhir found his top scientist, Launch, sitting in front of the holographic display, busy as always, the display like much in this facility was captured Draconian technology and was invaluable to their operations it filled little more than a third of the centre of the room but was easily seen from anyone the hologram itself had a blue and black finish. As Duinhir approached neither Launch nor the other scientists moved they were all engrossed in their work. His genius was the source of Duinhir’s advanced technology that kept him leaps and bounds ahead of the pirate forces that surrounded him and to some point Kixeye and the Draconians. Launch had deciphered the Draconian weapon and hull blue prints before others started to obtain them, he had designed the aircraft that Duinhir used, and he had helped design the Enterprise-class carriers which helped Duinhir project his forces might.
Now Duinhir stood in front of Launch’s latest creation in some ways he wondered if it was the best yet despite barely understanding half of what the weapon was. It large split barrel which obvious was lined with some additional electrically powered mechanisms. Duinhir looked at the weapon, but couldn’t make heads or tails of it. He couldn’t understand why a barrel required electrically operated guidance, but this must be the reason he was called to meet Launch at the testing range. He knew it was electrically powered in some way and fired massive rounds; of course that was a given as two massive shells lay on pallets beside the weapon, each the size of a fully grown man. As Duinhir started to walk along the length of the shells he noticed the standard black trefoil on yellow back ground and frozen in his tracks.
“What the hell is this Launch!” He yelled as he turned to look at the man, Duinhir rarely was caught completely unaware of something or unable to decipher one of the scientist’s inventions but this one had him completely stumped.
“Sir it’s the only way to power the firing and guidance track of the new weapon.” The younger man said as he came out from behind the desk to stand beside Duinhir. “In fact we are ready for its first test firing.”
“This I want to see.” Duinhir said.
Launch turned to a team of technicians and motioned to them. The team moved in to action and connected the test weapon up to a truck and moved it in the test range that ran the length of the bases eastern seawall. The weapon was placed into the test blocks and aimed down the length of the narrow tunnel. It took thirty minutes for the weapon to be moved in to place, but after those testing preparations picked up speed. A pair of technicians connected power cables up to the weapons main body and then laid the cables out on the testing ranges deck. The power cables for the firing system were connected to the power unit that bore the black trefoil on yellow background, and all of the personal cleared the firing range. Large blast doors started to close as Launch started the power up sequence on the control console that was position inside a control room that was connected to the testing range. An ear piercing loud electrical buzz started emitting from the firing range. Its volume getting louder and louder by the passing second until after a ten second build up a sudden a loud boom went off in the test range and the weapon recoiled as the large shell shot free of the weapon’s muzzle and shot straight down the entire length of the test range. Behind the shell ringlets of air showed the shell’s path and a sonic boom followed in the wake of the shell. The entire test firing only last a few seconds from the power up to the impact of the shell on the reinforced wall at the other end of the test range.
“860 meters.” Launch said as the weapon began to shut down. “Not bad for a first design, but I think I can get another 100 meters from the weapon.”
“What the Hell is that thing?” Duinhir said as he blinked his eye lids in amazement of the powerful weapon.
“Admiral, that is a railgun, pending your approval our newest weapon of war.” Launch said as the shutdown sequence ended and the panels showed that the nuclear power source was beginning to go in to cool down mode. "Originally created by the old state of America, a very powerful weapon despite carrying no warhead the damage is entirely kinetic." He explained “So, how many do you want?” Launch said as he leaned against the control console.
“I want twenty of them delivered to the shipyard As Soon As Possible.” Duinhir said as he picked up the phone and dialled in the shipping offices number.
“This is Duinhir.” Duinhir looked straight at Launch as he begun. “I want all five of the new Dreadnoughts returned to the yards of refitting. “

Tech Captain Owen turned to the class and sat down on the table the held the projector. “That is the video from the first test firing of the railgun.” Owen looked up at the sketches of the weapon that followed the video clip. “The footage was obtain from the ruins of Paragumo Island a few months after the battle of sector one.” Owen got up and walked around the room, looking at each student’s face as they made notes in their study guides. “Duinhir used these weapons against the fleet of Forsaken Loyalist that was being commanded by Rowan Duinhir.” Owen stopped in the back of the class. “960 meters gentleman.” He put some emphasis on the range. “Only Assault missiles that are equipped with solid fuel boosters can reach those ranges and this weapon does this range in a matter of seconds.” He paused for a moment allowing it to sink in. "Fortunately power, and size restirctions mean that even the mighty Draconian Dreadnoughts can only carry four of these weapons, a Forsaken Fortress or Hammerhead would only be able to carry three and that would be entirely without support guns. There are ways to get around this weapon; you just need to know how to fight it. Get in close, eliminate its range advantage and suddenly the Captain of the ship will be feeling quite worried you will also note that the weapon needs to build up power before firing slowing its rate of fire. There have been Dreadnoughts equipped with this weapon destroyed, they are not indestructible, remember that and immediately you have a chance." He said suddenly feeling aged beyond his years.
Owen continued to walk around the room. “In the months that followed railgun armed dreadnoughts made up over one third of the New Republics naval forces, along with the new Barracuda submarine, Enterprise-class carrier, Epic-class battleship and Bismarck-class Battle-cruiser.” Owen’s path took him completely around the parameter of the class room. “The naval forces of the New Republic are one of the most powerful alliances to be on the sea to this day.” Owen stopped and looked back at the class. “The Forsaken Loyalist, New Republic, Draconians and the remnant Kixeye Corporation forces form the four factions that are in place now, the rest of us sit back and prey that they never come to open conflict, as we will all likely feel their wrath. Especially if the command structure of the New Republic has at their disposal what everyone hopes they don’t have at their disposal.” Owen stopped behind the podium and look from student to student. “Any questions?”
“Yes sir.” Albert Comings stood up. “Is it really possible that the New Republic has the ability to launch nuclear missiles at its enemies?”
Owen took a deep breath and answered the young man. “We hope they don’t, but it is very possible that if they are using nuclear reactors to power their Dreadnoughts and carriers, then most likely they have the capability to assembling a nuclear missile.” All the students looked at each other and Susan Abernathy stood up as Albert sat back down.
“If they have such powerful weapons such as this railgun and a vertical launched missile system, why would they need to possess such destructive weapons?” she said in her quite but calm voice.
“Like the countries of old, The New Republic sees the nuclear threat as a control feature that gives them the ability to keep the other three factions under control.” Owen looked directly at her. “If you have the biggest stick on the playground all the other kids will stop and think twice about attacking you.” A smile came across Owens face. “It is a physiological weapon more than a physical one. But no one knows for sure if The New Republic as them or not only that Duinhir was willing to use one once to further his goals, and once is often followed by twice.”
