I have never gotten the escort to function and what does it do anyway. The noobs with the low level fleets steal at will knowing that unless someone tips you off they are unlikely to be confronted. The having a cargo fleet near is not enough as during these weekend forays the chance of losing your cargo fleet is higher because of Vega sec fleet action. Make sure you use the one cruiser/five rancors setup as it's been updated since the fleet was first made as Vsec were tweaked a while ago. There are other auto fleets out there, I suspect, but so far I haven't found them.
