Your base is the only defense in War Zones and PVP. If they are easily taken then you cannot protect your position in War Zones and your resources in PVP. So the task is to make it as hard to take down as possible in your present level of technology.

Firstly, determine what to protect and make your platforms/platform weapons your best technology.
1) What to protect?
Well you have to make sure your platforms cover each other so that you do not have a lone platform.
Next you have to protect your war factory and bunker as you can place defenders in there to help in defense. 
People will drain your defenders, flank them, but they will go after your war factory/bunker if they see a lot of potential hurtful defenders.
The defenders you choose do matter, Rhinos are bad, machine gunners are bad, even a whole bunch of basic soldiers are potent. at mid level try to get 3 rhinos(some missile vehicles), a lot of riflemen and one to three helicopters.
Lastly protect CC will heklp you win when you have almost killed the attackers offenive powers but they will try to win by %......that is they will try to kill anything not protected to gain % to win. deny them the win with a CC and some platforms.


2) upgrade your platforms as you upgrade your command center (CC), so level 3 CC should have level 3 platforms. sometimes its not economically to upgrade so maintain your platforms 1 level down from your CC like my platform is level 4 but my CC is level 5 now. Platform weapons should upgraded as you level up. now I have level 5 CC and using using level 5 machine guns, level 1 Salvo and level 2 railguns.

3) What weapons to use and placing matters.
basically put all platforms close by.  Use machine guns as AA and front guns, use howiter guns/salvo as centerly placed platforms to provide long range bombardment. Place Railguns behind machine guns so they charge up with enough time to do harm.
Machine guns are best AA and front assault gun, They are effective against light vehicles/infantries and fixed wings/helicopters but not good with tanks.
Railguns has slow charge up period but the high powered shot kills one Rhino in 1 shot. its not effective with swarms of light vehicles/infantries. No AA.
Howitzers guns are not very high dps but with 2-3 of them, they kill light vehicles fast. they are useless in close range. no AA.
Salvo is very effective against light vehicles and infantries but not good in close range. they can hit AA but not very effective.

Regarding placement of platforms, there are only a few choices:-

4) how to use the land terrain and mines effectively.
Using the terrain could be a natural way to shield off one corner of your base and its really effective if you create a mine field around that area so vehicles or infantries cannot walk in quickly.

Wall are useful when they are used against tanks and infantries, they are not so effective against missiles or rocket buggies or AA.

5) defense against Combined arms Tactics (CAT)
some players have put their best way against most bases into effective CAT teams, some of those teams includes:-
a) tanks and buggies, the ratio of tanks and buggies are not really important but at least 6 buggies is necessary for good kills in one shot in mid levels.
b) tanks and infantries are great but you need a lot of infantries of at least 20-30 of them.
c) Humvee and buggies are light and they are very effective in hit and run missions or against helicopters.
